RICE
Rice is one of the major food crops of Himachal Pradesh cultivated on 86,200 hectares
during 1997-98 with a production of 1,20,680 tonnes and an average yield of 1400 kg per
hectare. Kangra and Mandi districts which have more than 65% rice area in the State, have
great potential for improving their yields and increasing rice production in the State.
The main reasons for low yields of rice in H.P. are low plant population, less use of fertilizer and
inadequate weed control. Besides, low temperature due to cold irrigation water and low ambiant temperature
at flowering stage, coupled with high incidence of blast disease add more to the dimensions.
