The crop is generally relegated to lands to low fertility and where no manuring done. On the other hand, this crop does not tolerate excessive fertilization which causes luxuriant vegetative growth and renders it susceptible to disease and lodging. However to obtain good yield, manuring with 60 kg N, 40 kg P2O5 and 20 kg K2O per hectare at the time of sowing the crop is necessary. About 30 tonnes of farm yard manure (FYM) should be applied before sowing. The nutrient dose should be reduced to half under un-irrigated conditions.
When sown pure, one thorough hoeing should be done to remove the weeds after three weeks of sowing. The crop should also be thinned at this stage
