Himachal Pradesh as suggested by its name is in the lap of Himalayas. It has a deeply dissected topography with an intricate mosaic of high mountain ranges and deep valleys of varying slopes and sizes at different altitudes. Physiographically the State is divided into following categories:

Valleys:

These are upto an elevation of 1000meters. These are very fertileand can be used for intensive agricultural activities.

Low hills:

These have an altitude of 1000 to 2000 meters and are suitable for Horticulture.

High hills:

These are between 2000 to 3500 meters and are sparsely populated. They are good forraising forests.

Alpine zones:

Above 3500 meters, they are good for grazing pastures.

Snow cladded ranges:

They are practically devoid of any vegetation.
