Alpine pastures traversed by Gaddi community provide nutritious grass species of Poa, Festuca, Dactylis, Chrysopogon and other indigenous grasses. The winter pasture have cyondon, Iseilema, Heteropogon and other local species of grasses and a variety of leguminous medics and creepers in addition to leaves of edible bushes like carissa spinarum. In summer temperature in alpines range between 5 to 30°C. Where as during winter when the flock are in the low lands or in spring and autumn when the sheep are enroute migration, the temperature fluctuates in the same order thus providing uniform and congenial conditions for rearing. During the habitation period of flock at the higher elevation rain fall is low and Foggy or light drizzly weather prevails. In winter these pastures get scanty rains with heavy snowfall. This serves as a boon to migratory flocks as when on return from plains they get lush green pastures with melting of snow.
