Existing breeding policy of the State

Sheep & Wool Development/Existing breeding policy of the State

Indigenous Gaddi or Rampur Bushahari ewes are to be crossed with pure bred exotic rams of Rambouillet or Russian Merino breed so that in F 1 Generation Exotic and indigenous inheritance comes at 50:50 level. In F 2 generation the progeny of F 1 generation (50% crossed bred ewe) is to be again crossed with pure bred exotic ram of Rambouillet or Russian Merino breed so that the progeny thus produced has exotic and indigenous inheritance at 75:25 level. Thereafter in subsequent generation Rams with 75% exotic inheritance are to be used for cross breeding to maintain exotic and indigenous inheritance at 75:25 level.
For bringing improvement in flocks of the farmers and to reduce dependability on outside sources for the lambs, efforts are being made to practice selection and rearing ram lambs in the farmers flock and their use in their flocks and for distribution to other flocks
To help in the practical approach in the hybridization of the local sheep through cross breeding, the Department of Animal Husbandry is maintaining

4 Sheep Breeding Farms

  1. Jeori (District Shimla),

  2. Karchham (District Kinnaur),

  3. Tal (District Hamirpur), Sarol (District Chamba) and

  4. Ram Centre at Nagwain (District Mandi),

where exotic sheep in pure strain are being multiplied. Male hoggets/rams of Rambouillet are being supplied at a nominal rate to interested breeders for carrying out cross-breeding. From Ram Centre, Nagwain (District Mandi) Rams are supplied during breeding season to the sheep breeders and at the end of breeding season these rams are brought back to ram center. Apart from these sheep breeding farms there are 10 Sheep & Wool Extension Centres which are making available pure exotic rams from the State farms or the cross bred rams from improved flock of sheep breeders and also managing health care of sheep flock of their region.
Consequent upon various sheep development programmes being executed by the State and the encouraging response of the local sheep breeders, the total wool production is showing an upward trend. Wool production has increased from 1343.60 tons to 1650 tons in last 4 years.
